Why do I attend the Union Retreat?
I attend the Union Retreat for three definite reasons. When I come through the gates, I am always filled with a feeling of returning home. This is a special feeling, which is accompanied by thanks. Thanks to my parents for providing the opportunity, thanks to the College community, who nurtured and supported the rounded, fulfilled person I am today and finally my classmates of 1994 who I thank for the positive memories and lifelong friendships, as we continue to support each other to this day.
The second reason is to the feeling of being part of a larger community and a shared camaraderie. It is the only Union event every year where you are not in year groups. You speak with and eat wherever a free seat is. I enjoy this as it you get to speak to both younger and older members of the Union. I particularly enjoy listening to stories of years past and the different perspective the older members of the union have. This perspective is usually delivered with a devilment, which remains true to their teenage selves.
The final reason it gives me a chance to slow down and contemplate. The Retreat gives me an opportunity to reset and reorder my personal goals. I enjoy the silent contemplation the halls of the College provide. The days away from my normal, routine fills me with a renewed hope in handling life’s ups and downs.
